White rice is a variety of rice that is enrooted by Tamil Nadu Agricultural University in 1986. It is widely cultivated in Tamil Nadu. Since the river Kaveri is named as ponni in Tamil literature, the rice could be named after the river. Ponni can be cultivated in any land particularly where there is high temperature and water but can be best grown in Tamil Nadu in the river Kaveri.
