Millet was discovered in the Europe in the Christian era and is widely distributed in the African countries and East India. In 4500 BC oldest millets were grown along with the sacred crops in china. The directions of growing and storing millet were written by Fan Shen Chih Shu in 1,800 BC which is one of the earlier recorded writing. The Millets can be prepared as the gruel cooked in milk which was written by the explorer Marco polo. Africans learned from Egyptians how to cultivate millet that grows well in Sahara where wheat and barley could not. Millets are annual grass type that is found majorly in the arid and semi-arid regions of the world. There are around 60,000 varieties of millet and also the color varies from pale yellow, grey, white and red. Millet is one of the fastest growing plants that can be cultivated and harvested within 45 to 65 days whereas Finger millet can be stored for five years.
History states that ragi was one of the staple food of Karnataka and it is cultivated first in Hallur region of Karnataka in the later Iron Age. In the areas of Africa and Asia ragi is widely grown as an important crop. Conferring to the eminent historians, K.T.Achaya, ragi initially originated in east Africa and later came to India around 2000 BCE. On considering the various nutrition properties, the consumption of ragi increased in urban areas among the widely spreaded population. Ragi can be used in different ways depending on the essence as drink, food, snacks, etc. It helps to manage the cholesterol, problems, helps to eradicate anemia, reduces the risk of diabetes, gives a sense of relaxation, has various amino acids such as Tryptophan, Threonine, Isoleucine and Methionoine, etc.
